Mother to be Massage

These sessions are available to women from 14 weeks pregnant.

Pregnancy is a joyous time, but it can also be stressful and very hard on your body. Receiving regular massage throughout pregnancy has been shown to have many benefits:

  • Release of muscular tension – massage at any time can relax muscles however during pregnancy it can specifically ease discomfort from sciatica pain and Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)
  • Induces relaxation and peaceful sleep
  • Helps to regulate blood pressure
  • Release oxytocin which is a pain reducing hormone
  • Releases ‘feel good’ endorphins which not only relax you but also your baby – being in tune with your body and learning how to relax can greatly help with the first stages of labour often resulting in shorter and easier births, less pain and fewer complications.
  • Greater success with breastfeeding – due to increased prolactin during massage and a baby who has increased levels of endorphins and has experienced how to relax.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and pregnancy massage

During pregnancy, blood flow and fluid can increase by up to 35-50% to accommodate the developing baby. In the last months the baby's weight and size pushes down on the pelvis, constricting nerves, blood and lymphatic vessels. This can lead to back pain and also limits the amount of the excess fluid the lymphatic system can return to your blood allowing it to collect in your legs and feet, especially if you are sitting for long periods e.g at work.

MLD, a very gentle and soothing type of massage has been proven to reduce volume of fluid retained in arms and legs in pregnant women. If you are experiencing problems with swollen legs and would like to include MLD in your session, please specify this when booking.

What to expect

Your needs are a priority so a discussion will be had before your massage to identify any particular areas, aches or pains you may want to focus on. With this in mind, your massage is performed in the side lying position using bolsters and pillows to make you comfortable, safe and relaxed.  You can expect a full body massage including face and scalp, hands and feet. During the session you will be asked to move to different positions on the table to allow for a whole-body massage, your modesty and ease of positioning and movement are taken great care of as this can be challenging especially when heavily pregnant. Relaxing music will be offered, or you may prefer to enjoy your massage in perfect silence.

If you would like to discuss this any aspect of this treatment, please get in touch to arrange an informal chat.
